Jewish Songs at an Exhibition with Sharon Bernstein and Stu Brotman
Saturday, September 8, 8:30pm

JCC East Bay, 1414 Walnut Street, Berkeley

Yiddish singer Sharon Bernstein (voice & piano) and klezmer pioneer Stu Brotman (bass, tsimbl & percussion) join forces in a unique performance set to paintings by self-taught Toronto artist Mayer Kirshenblatt. Kirshenblatt's vibrant portraits of his home town Apt, Poland before the Holocaust inspire a rich blend of traditional song and contemporary sound. Projected images of the paintings connected with the songs complete this experience that recalls Polish shtetl life. Presented in conjunction with the book They Called me Mayer July: Painted Memories of Jewish Life in Poland Before the Holocaust by Mayer Kirshenblatt and Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett ( University of California Press, forthcoming September 2007) and exhibition with the same title at the Judah L. Magnes Museum, Septermber 10, 2007 - January 13, 2008.

As the “People of the Book,” we are inspired by the values of social justice, tikun olam, and quality public education.  Join the Jewish Coalition for Literacy (JCL) and other members of your community to foster literacy among the most at-risk children in underserved public schools through volunteer tutoring and school enhancement projects.  The JCL offers free training and support to over 500 Bay Area tutors working in over 50 schools. This Back To School season, sign up for a free 2-hour training session in your area.  The JCL supports tutors in schools and after-school programs in your community, so you don’t have to travel far to see the value in your work. The JCL is a registered 501(c)(3).

Bone Marrow Donor Drive - “He who saves one life, it is as if he had saved the entire world.” — Talmud
Alan has leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant to survive. Since tissue type is inherited,

questions about this life-saving medical resource for the Jewish community. You may be Alan’s miracle match!
- Donors will be entered into the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Registry
for the benefit of patients worldwide in desperate need of
life-saving matches.
- Eligible donors must be between the ages of 18-60 and in general good health.
- Registration involves a simple swab of cells from inside the cheeks (No blood required at this stage).
