Hannah Arendt Reading Group

January 9, 2018 - 7:00pm to 9:00pm

This group meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm to discuss the writings of Hannah Arendt.

The election of Donald Trump has brought about a renewed and very strong interest in Arendt's political writings. Though those writings date from the 50’s to the 70’s, Arendt's profound understanding of Western political history made her remarkably prescient of the implications and potential results of contemporary political decisions. We discovered that over and over again as we marveled at the relevance of her analyses of truth and lying in politics, and of deception, civil disobedience and violence to our current political situation in the work we've just completed, Crises of the Republic. For this reason we’ve chosen as our next reading On Revolution, Arendt’s probing analysis of the violent history that produced and still permeates the modern age. We’ll begin reading the work at our next meeting on January 9. New members are very welcome. Those interested in attending a meeting can begin reading the work in the Penguin Classics edition, and should contact Sandra Luft, srluft@sfsu.edu for information on the sections to be read each month.
