Sixth Graders Studying Torah with Rabbi Zellman

Welcome

Welcome to Congregation Beth El Youth & Family Education. From birth to high school graduation, Beth El offers a variety of ways to engage your children in the joy of Jewish learning and practice together.

At Congregation Beth El, we nurture the joy of being Jewish by bringing Judaism to life for everyone. Through music, art, drama, cooking, nature and dance, our students are exposed to Jewish values and traditions. Our educational programs present Torah and other Jewish texts, modern Israel, Hebrew, holidays, and Jewish history to intellectually challenge our students and stimulate their interest in discovering the wisdom that Judaism has to offer.

We encourage educated decision making and the formation of a positive Jewish identity. Parents, siblings and grandparents are encouraged to join us in learning, celebration and observance of Jewish rituals- both at home and at Beth El. Your partnership in this journey is essential for a meaningful Jewish learning experience.

Beth El youth and family education includes both formal and informal learning opportunities. We strive to take the students outside of the classroom to foster experiential Jewish education. Thus, we offer opportunities such as Beth El youth group, madrichim (teaching assistants), family retreats, and our weekly Shabbat family school- Chug Mishpacha.

We consider it a privilege to be a part of your life and to share with you our passion for Judaism. We look forward to embarking on the journey of learning with you and your family!

Our Programs
At Beth El, we offer two options for educational programs- a midweek program (Kadima) and our Shabbat Family School (Chug Mishpacha). On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, students in grades K-6 are engaged in hands-on learning activities which nurture their curiosity about Judaism at our Kadima program. Our core curriculum has three components- Torah, avodah (spiritual growth) and g’milut hasadim (righteous acts). Students choose from various “chugim” (electives) to complement their Judaic and Hebrew classes. Art, music, cooking, dance and modern Hebrew enrich the core curriculum.  Chug Mishpacha is our innovative Saturday morning family program which offers Jewish education for the whole family.  This program meets weekly and includes separate adult study, grade level classes, family learning and whole group worship and singing. Activities are aimed to engage participants in life-long Jewish learning and foster strong friendships among families.

When
Grades K-2:  Our weekday program is on Thursday afternoon, from 4:00-6:00 pm.  Students can arrive anytime after 3pm, and many of our students arrive through BUSD and Prospect Sierra buses and carpools.  We also offer the Shabbat Family School from 9:30-11:45 which is INSTEAD of going on Thursday afternoon, and includes all members of the family.

Grades 3-6:  Our weekday program is on Tuesday AND Thursday, from 4:00-6:00.  Students can arrive anytime after 3pm, and many of our students arrive through BUSD and Prospect Sierra buses and carpools.  We also offer the Shabbat Family School from 9:30-11:45.  In addition, students need to attend parent/child Hebrew class 1x/week.  These parent/chilld Hebrew classes are offered on Saturdays from 12:15-1:15, or on Wednesdays from 5:00-6:00. At least one adult is required to participate in this program with the student.

B'nei Mitzvah
Grade 7: In order to enroll a 7th grader in our b'nei mitzvah program,  this student must have previously participated in our 5th and 6th grade programs. Over the course of these three years, students will learn how to read Hebrew prayers, practice leading the congregation, examine the meaning of the prayers, and engage in Jewish learning.  The b'nei mitzvah class runs the course of the student's 7th grade year and meets on Tuesday afternoons from 4:00-7:00 pm.  Students come only once a week and stay to eat dinner together, creating a fun-filled environment that helps to build community. They will also have service learning commitments, Shabbat service attendance requirements, individual b'nei mitzvah tutoring sessions and cohort events during the year.
