Volunteer or Participate

High Holy Days at Beth El are enhanced and made possible through your support of and participation in services.

Some of the volunteer / participation opportunities are:

Service Participation

  • Torah Honors—open/close the Ark; hold, lift, carry, or dress the Torah
  • English Reading
  • Hebrew Reading
  • Sound the Shofar
  • Chant Torah or Haftarah (short portions for all morning services)
If you have any questions about service participation, please contact Peggy Lipson at peggylipson@comcast.net

Ushers & Greeters

Ushers play a key role in our High Holy Days services. They distribute books, check tickets, assist those with special needs, help guide people to their seats, and most importantly, make everyone feel at home. Ushers are asked to arrive about 30 minutes before services, and then assist people exiting after the service. Once people are seated, ushers can join their families during the service.

If you have questions about ushering, please call the Beth El office, (510) 848-3988, or email Head Usher, Bill Marthinsen at marthinsen@comcast.net.

The chorus is always open to new singers! Rehearsals take place on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm beginning on July 25 at Beth El. Please join us! For any questions, contact Cantor Elaya Jenkins-Adelberg at cantorelaya@bethelberkeley.org.

We also need help in the office with ticket order processing and ticket mailing. Another opportunity to lend a hand is to prepare the break-fast. If these options interest you or you have another idea how you would like to contribute, please email us at hdd@bethelberkeley.org.
