Between the Star of David and the Red Flag: Betty Rosenfeld 1907-1942

Join us for a conversation with German historian Michael Uhl. His recently published book Between the Star of David and the Red Flag covers the tragic fate of Betty Rosenfeld, a Jewish nurse from Southern Germany who, after escaping to Palestine/Eretz Israel and participating in the Spanish Civil War, was interned in France, then extradited to Nazi Germany along with her fiancé and finally murdered in Auschwitz. Her younger sister managed to emigrate to California and was the mother of one of our synagogue’s members.

In addition to the biographical narrative, he will cover political and cultural currents within German Jewish society during that time period. There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion.

Michael Uhl, historian, was born in Stuttgart in 1971. He spent over five years researching in German, French, Spanish, American, Israeli and Russian archives to discover the story of Betty Rosenfeld. His book was published in Germany earlier this year.
