7:00 PM - 8:00 PMLocation will be emailed to registrants before event.

The history of the Yishuv (the Jewish community in Mandatory Palestine before 1948) and of the modern State of Israel are inextricably linked with immigration. As historian Aviva Halamish has said, "Immigration is Israel's history."

In this talk, Dr. Viola Alianov-Rautenberg (Research Fellow, Pacific Office of the German Historical Institute, UC Berkeley) will examine major migration movements from the 19th to 21st century, as well as how historians have interpreted migration’s role in Israel’s development.

Dr. Alianov-Rautenberg is the author of a new book: No Longer Ladies and Gentlemen: Gender and the German-Jewish Migration to Mandatory Palestine (Stanford University Press, 2023).
