Peacemakers Even In a Time of War: Remembering the First Anniversary of October 7th as We Move Into Selichot/Forgiveness and High Holy Days

Tuesday, September 17, 2024 14 Elul 5784

6:30 PM - 8:30 PMSanctuary

This event is dedicated to the memory of Berkeley native Hersh Goldberg-Polin and all the innocent victims who have been killed since October 7th.

Join Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger and his Roots colleague Mr. Noor Awad as they recount the stories of their life in the Holy Land,  and how they were jolted out of their hubris of exclusivity by meeting the ‘other side’. The deep personal transformations that they underwent brought them to become peace-makers, enabling Israelis and Palestinians to encounter each other and to thereby come to recognize the fullness of the other side’s identity.

Since October 7 the work has become exponentially harder, as hearts have hardened on both sides, violence has skyrocketed, and fear and trauma have taken over. As bleak as the situation is however, the widening of perspective and the healing that can occur through face-to-face meetings will always remain indispensable to creating a better future for both sides.

Introspection on both the personal and collective levels of identity is central to this process.
